How to help a person with bulimia?

Bulimia as a condition is widespread, and each of us probably knows someone suffering from this condition. Family member or a friend with bulimia needs your help.
What should you do? And how much can you help?

You should read this article, and you will understand that that your help to a person with bulimia can be significant even though you are not a doctor.

But what should you do?

It’s better to first outline what you shouldn’t do.

Don’t ever be judgmental, don’t accuse them, bulimia is an illness not a craving for attention. Don’t blame persons with bulimia for their condition, they are the last ones to blame.

Try not to pressure them to eat more, as it will surely lead to more problems. You don’t control their life, don’t be controlling,you should offer your help and support instead. Never talk about food or eating, clothes or appearance. Do everything in your power to avoid making them feel guilty. Don’t try to treat a bulimic person as a doctor. Leave that to those who are qualified.
What should you do?

Educate yourself. You need to acquire basic understanding of bulimia nervosa. It’s a serious condition and can lead to fatal consequences if left untreated. Don’t forget that.

Talk with a person, be calm and kind, avoid sensitive subjects. Listen what they have to say, show compassion and more importantly show that you understand. Be honest when stating your concerns.

Be patient persons with bulimia are aware of their condition and are struggling. Don’t force them to seek professional help, instead encourage them.

Show that you care and want what’s best for them and don’t try to control them. Encourage them to eat foods that they like. Invite them to participate in activities that don’t involve food or eating.

Try to compliment things that a person with bulimia accomplished, this is very important as bulimia is a result of a distorted self image.
