Understanding clinical depression
By admin | August 19, 2007
A great part of the world population suffers from depression, billions of dollars are spent every year on treatment and research and yet the majority of us just doesn’t know what is depression and how much damage it can inflict on us and our lives. Depression if left untreated can lead directly to death, and millions of people only in US are at risk of being cut down by this illness.
Yet we fail to understand how depression develops. Scientists believe it can have genetic physical, psychological, and social causes, but they can tell for sure. Do they understand clinical depression? Do they really understand basic human needs ?
Basic human needs are the key of understanding clinical depression. And also are best weapon of prevention that we have in our hands. Someone once said that humans are humans only when they are with other humans. Its a need, that we can not be deprived of. We as humans need human touch, we need kindness.
We need to smile and laugh. Attention that we sometimes receive is enjoyable for a reason. We need it. So take time to ask people how are they, pay them a compliment. It maybe not much for you but it can help on a much larger scale.
Also don’t take your family and friends for granted, when you spend time with them stay focused on them, and stay in the present time don’t let your thoughts wonder to the past, or future. Sense of belonging is another basic human need that must be addressed. People join cults when deprived of this.
You need a purpose in your life, you need goals to help you stay on the track. Find and set your goals than act on them. Every time you achieve something that you set as your goal, is a step away from clinical depression.
Take care of your body. You should sweat from once in a while, physical health is important for your mental health and vice versa. It doesn’t cost a thing to step out of your home and run for 10 minutes, but the benefits are great.
Also don’t be an island for yourself. That’s impossible – you need to connect with others. Intimacy is one of the most important human needs. Share your feelings with someone it does not hurt.
Remember the bast way to avoid depression is human touch in your life.
