Newborns and colic
By admin | August 9, 2007
Becoming a parent for every man and woman is a beautiful, but very stressful event. There are all this new things that you have to get used to – you’ve just created a new life that totally depends on you. There are also mood changes – not being able to sleep enough, to get enough rest; then perfectly new lifestyle – buying baby clothes, toys and if you’re breastfeeding, making sure that every meal is nutritious and healthy for the baby.
But, there are few things that parents cannot control, and one of them is baby’s cry. For no apparent reason.
Colic is continued or persistant baby’s cry that occurs without any logical or apparent reason. Typically lasts for 2-5 hours per day and for at least 5 days a week. This condition is not very usual, studies show that 1out of 5 babies are diagnosed with colic.
The cause of colic is not fully understood. There are few theories that could be possible:
1. Probable gas that causes pain in baby’s abdominal. To prevent this, parents should make sure that bottles they use are designed to reduce air. Mothers who are breastfeeding should consult their doctor for any changes in their nutrition. It is also good to reduce the use of broccoli, which is proven to increase gas.
2. Other theory is that newborn babies are very sensitive to light, noise… That might be true because of their immature nervous system that is not fully developed. This can be prevented by making sure that the baby’s environment is calm and quiet, without very bright light.
3. Some scientists think that even parent’s stress can cause a colic. Babies are very sensitive and can sense their parent’s nervousness and anxiety. Because of the special bond, negative feelings are more likely to transfer onto babies.
The symptoms of this condition are diagnosed as high-pitched crying, mixed with baby’s unusual behavior, such as uncontrolled moving of their hands and legs. Even though parents are doing everything possible to stop the crying, nothing seems to work. If colic is accompanied with vomiting, abdominal pain or fever, doctor should be noticed as soon as possible.
Colic, although very disturbing and frightening for parents, is not a serious condition. Babies with colic are usually in good health so there should be no reason to worry. Pediatrician should be contacted just in case to rule out any other medical condition.
But, if it lasts for a longer period of time, this high-pitched crying can cause a lot of stress and anxiety within the family. It is logical that lot of crying is getting on everyone’s nerves. Parents shouldn’t feel worried if they feel this way. It is perfectly normal. It’s very important to say that colic stops after few weeks and after that, this condition is not likely to return.
Colic is not anyone’s fault. This stress lasts for a short period of time and after that, it’s all about enjoying the new member of the family.
